What natural oud actually is
Natural oud oil (dahn al oud) is distilled directly from resin-infused agarwood. It’s the genuine article — variable, complex, and shaped by region, tree age and distillation method. It’s also, as covered in our pricing guide, expensive and limited in supply.
What synthetic oud actually is
Synthetic oud isn’t a single ingredient but a family of lab-created materials engineered to recreate oud’s woody, resinous, sometimes animalic character, often built from molecules that don’t occur naturally at all. Modern synthetic oud accords can be remarkably convincing, and they’ve become a mainstay of both mass-market and prestige perfumery — not because they’re cheating, but because they’re consistent, scalable and don’t rely on a slow-growing, regulated tree.

Is synthetic oud “fake”?
Not in any meaningful sense. A synthetic oud accord is a genuine piece of perfumery craft, not a counterfeit — the same way a synthetic vanillin isn’t a “fake” vanilla. The honest distinction is origin, not authenticity: one comes from a tree, one from a lab, and both can be well or badly made.
How to tell what you’re buying
- Check the product description for “pure oud oil” or “dahn al oud” — this signals natural, undiluted material.
- “Oud-forward” or “oud accord” usually signals a blend, often with synthetic components alongside natural ones.
- Price is a reasonable proxy: genuine pure oud oil is rarely cheap. A very low price with “pure oud” claims deserves scepticism.
- A reputable seller will tell you plainly which you’re getting — ask, if it isn’t clear.
