Inside a Dubai Perfume Souk: What They Don’t Tell Tourists
Walking into a perfume souk for the first time can feel overwhelming — dozens of stalls, hundreds of bottles, and multiple shopkeepers all confidently claiming their oud is “the real one.” Understanding a few honest realities makes the whole experience far easier to navigate.
Prices Are Often Negotiable
The first thing worth knowing is that prices in a traditional souk are very often negotiable, reflecting how the culture of trade has worked in the region for a long time. This doesn’t mean every price is inflated for tourists, but it does mean the first price offered is rarely the final one.
Not All Oud Is Equal
Just as important: not everything labelled “oud” is genuine, high-quality agarwood oil. Quality varies enormously from stall to stall, and some cheaper bottles are made largely or entirely from synthetic aromachemicals built to mimic the smell. That isn’t automatically dishonest — synthetic oud is a legitimate, more affordable product in its own right — but it should be priced and sold as exactly what it is. A useful habit is asking plainly where a particular oud is from, and noting how specific and consistent the answer is.
Why Testing In A Souk Is Hard
Testing matters just as much here as with any perfume, but a busy souk full of competing scents is one of the worst environments to judge a fragrance accurately. Testing on a strip or the wrist, then stepping outside before deciding, makes a real difference.
The Cultural Hospitality Layer
There’s a genuine cultural layer too — many shopkeepers welcome you to sit, talk, and try several things without pressure to buy immediately, since hospitality is taken seriously in this culture. It’s equally acceptable to say you’d like to think it over without feeling obligated.
Four Simple Habits
Four simple habits help: ask the price more than once, test outside the souk itself, ask directly where an oud is from, and never feel rushed by how wonderful a bottle smells in the moment. Watch the full episode of The Scent Room with Sufian below for the complete guide.
