If you have a mild reaction — redness, itching, a rash where you applied it — wash the area with mild soap and water straight away, stop using that product, and take an antihistamine if needed. If you have any swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing, treat it as a medical emergency and seek help immediately.

Steps for a Mild Skin Reaction

  • Rinse the area thoroughly with lukewarm water and a mild, unscented soap
  • Remove any clothing that has fragrance on it if it is touching the irritated skin
  • Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser once the area is dry and calm
  • Take an over-the-counter antihistamine if itching or redness persists
  • Avoid that product going forward and note the ingredients so you can check for it elsewhere

When It’s More Than Just Skin

Watch for any sign the reaction is spreading beyond the immediate contact area — widespread hives, swelling of the lips, eyes or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing are all signs of a more serious reaction and need urgent medical attention rather than home treatment. Our guide to perfume allergies and sensitive skin covers this in full, and sits within the complete guide to perfume.
