It’s the question every newcomer asks, and the honest answer is: it depends which oud you mean.

The core character

At its heart, oud smells deep, woody and resinous — think warm, aged wood rather than a fresh-cut plank, with a richness closer to leather or dark honey than anything green or bright. From there it branches, depending on origin and grade, into sweet, smoky, spicy, leathery or distinctly animalic territory.

Descriptors people actually use

Woody and resinous — the baseline; think dense, aged timber rather than fresh sawdust.
Sweet — particularly in Cambodian-style ouds, with a warm, honeyed edge.
Smoky and leathery — common in Thai and some Indian ouds, reminiscent of a smouldering fire or worn leather.
Animalic or “barnyard” — a funky, musky note found in some intense Indian ouds; polarising, but prized by connoisseurs.

Does oud smell like wood?

Yes, fundamentally — but not like a fresh plank of pine. It’s closer to a dense, dark hardwood that’s been aged, sometimes with resin still visibly seeping from it. That density is exactly what you’d expect from wood that a tree has spent years saturating in defensive resin.

Why oud smells different on everyone

Oud’s heavy, complex molecules interact strongly with individual skin chemistry — oil levels, pH, even diet and hydration all play a small part. It’s genuinely normal for the same oud to read as sweeter on one person and muskier on another.
