Why oud lasts so long

Oud is, chemically speaking, a heavy base note — its molecules are large, dense and slow to evaporate compared with the light citrus or herbal molecules that make up a fragrance’s opening. That’s precisely why perfumers use oud to anchor a composition: it’s built to be the last thing left standing, often many hours after the top notes have gone.

Oil vs spray: a longevity difference

Alcohol-based oud sprays project further, faster, but the alcohol carrier evaporates relatively quickly, taking some fragrance with it. Alcohol-free oud oil sits closer to the skin and releases its scent much more gradually — commonly six to twelve hours or more, sometimes lingering faintly into the next day. If longevity is your priority over projection, oil is generally the better bet.

What affects how long your oud lasts

  • Skin type — dry skin holds fragrance less well than moisturised skin, across any perfume, not just oud.
  • Concentration — a higher-concentration oud oil will outlast a lightly-diluted version.
  • Grade and origin — richer, more resinous ouds (and higher grades within a region) tend to have more staying power.
  • Application — dabbing onto warm pulse points performs better than a light, cursory swipe.

  • Moisturise with an unscented lotion before applying.
  • Apply to pulse points that generate warmth — wrists, neck, inner elbows.
  • Avoid rubbing it in; press or dab instead.
  • Consider a light layer of a complementary scent (amber or vanilla) to extend and deepen the dry-down.
