What Should You Do With an Empty Perfume Bottle?
An empty perfume bottle is worth rinsing and recycling if it’s plain glass, but if it has a nice shape or decorative detailing it’s often better reused around the house rather than binned, since well-made bottles rarely lose their charm just because the perfume’s gone.
Ways to reuse an empty bottle
- Use it as a small bud vase for single stems on a dressing table
- Keep it as a travel decant bottle for a different fragrance, once thoroughly cleaned and aired out
- Store cotton buds, hair pins, or small jewellery in a wide-necked one
- Repurpose it as a diffuser reed holder with a few drops of diffuser oil, if the neck is narrow enough
- Donate decorative or crystal bottles to craft groups, who often want them for upcycling projects
If reuse isn’t practical, remove the pump, rinse the glass, and put it out with your regular glass recycling, as covered in our answer on whether perfume bottles are recyclable. Our home fragrance guide has more on getting the most from scent around your home, and the complete guide to perfume covers the basics of bottle materials and design. Whatever you choose, giving the bottle a proper rinse first stops any leftover fragrance oil turning musty in storage. Even a plain bottle can earn its keep for a few more months before it eventually goes in the recycling.
