What Is Extrait de Parfum?
Extrait de parfum sits at the very top of the concentration ladder — the richest, purest expression of a fragrance.
Extrait de parfum (sometimes just “extrait” or “pure perfume”) typically contains 20-30% or more aromatic oil, the highest common concentration in commercial perfumery. The result is a fragrance that’s richer, closer to the skin, and often longer-lasting than any other format, usually with less initial projection but far greater staying power over the day.
Why it’s rarer and pricier
More concentrated fragrance oil is simply more expensive to produce in volume, and extrait formulas often use a higher proportion of costly natural materials to justify the format. It’s a deliberate, premium choice rather than a marketing label.
Frequently asked questions
Is extrait the same as perfume oil?
Related in spirit (both prioritise concentration and longevity) but different in carrier — extrait is typically alcohol-based at very high concentration; perfume oil uses an oil carrier instead.
