Perfumer measuring fragrance oil concentration into a glass bottle

Parfum, also called extrait de parfum, contains the highest concentration of fragrance oil, typically around 20 to 30 percent, while eau de parfum sits a notch below, usually around 15 to 20 percent. In practice this means parfum tends to be richer, last longer and use less product per wear.

Why the Percentage Matters

Fragrance oil is the expensive part of any perfume, so a higher concentration generally means a more expensive product, but also more scent packed into every drop. Parfum often has a slightly different character to eau de parfum of the same name, sometimes richer and warmer, because the higher oil content lets base notes come through more fully.

Which One to Choose

If you want maximum longevity and are happy applying less, parfum is worth the price. If you prefer a lighter, fresher feel that you can reapply through the day without it feeling heavy, eau de parfum is usually the better everyday choice. It is also worth remembering that not every fragrance is released in both concentrations, so sometimes the choice is made for you rather than being a genuine side-by-side comparison.
