There’s no correct number, but most people find three to six well-chosen fragrances covering different seasons and occasions genuinely more useful day to day than a huge, sprawling collection they rarely rotate through properly.

What a small, functional collection actually looks like

Think in terms of gaps rather than totals: something light and fresh for daytime or warm weather, something richer for evenings or colder months, and perhaps one that’s specifically “yours” for special occasions. Beyond that, more bottles mostly add variety rather than solving a genuine need, which is perfectly fine if you enjoy the hobby side of collecting, but it’s not something to feel pressured into.

The honest trade-off with collecting more

Perfume does degrade slowly over time, especially once opened and exposed to light, heat and air, so a large collection you can’t get through in a couple of years risks some bottles going slightly stale before you finish them. If you love the ritual of choosing a scent to match your mood, a bigger “fragrance wardrobe” makes sense. If you just want to smell good reliably, three or four honest workhorses will serve you better than twenty bottles gathering dust.
