Person gently holding a clear glass perfume bottle, sensitive skin fragrance use

Apply a small amount to an inconspicuous area, like the inner elbow or behind the ear, and leave it undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours, checking for any redness, itching or irritation before wearing the perfume more broadly.

Doing it properly

Choose an area you can easily check but that won’t be seen or disturbed, the inner elbow is a common choice, and apply a small, undiluted dab rather than a full spray. Avoid washing the area or covering it with clothing that rubs against it for at least a day, and check periodically for any redness, itching, swelling or discomfort. If nothing happens within 48 hours, it’s reasonably safe to assume the perfume won’t cause an obvious reaction on the rest of your skin.

When it’s especially worth doing

  • If you have a history of skin sensitivity or eczema
  • Before trying a completely new brand or fragrance family for the first time
  • If you’re pregnant or your skin has become more reactive than usual
