Are Perfume Oils Alcohol-Free?
It’s one of the most common questions we get, and thankfully one of the simplest to answer clearly.
Genuine perfume oils, including attars, are formulated with a carrier oil — commonly jojoba, fractionated coconut, sweet almond or a traditional base like sandalwood — instead of alcohol. That’s the defining feature of the format, not a marketing claim: without an oil carrier, it wouldn’t be a perfume oil at all.
Why this matters to buyers
- Skin comfort — alcohol can dry or irritate sensitive skin; oil carriers generally don’t.
- Religious observance — alcohol-free fragrance is the traditional and widely preferred choice for many Muslim wearers.
- Longevity — oil releases scent slowly rather than evaporating quickly, which is part of why oils last longer on skin.
How to check
A genuine perfume oil will list an oil carrier, not alcohol denat or similar, in its ingredients or description. If a product calls itself a “perfume oil” but lists alcohol prominently, ask the seller directly — the labelling isn’t always consistent across the market.
