Are Natural Attars Safer Than Alcohol Perfumes During Pregnancy?

Not automatically, “natural” doesn’t inherently mean safer, and some essential oils used in attars carry their own cautions during pregnancy, so it’s worth being just as thoughtful about attars as you would be about any alcohol-based fragrance.
Why “natural” isn’t automatically “safer”
Attars are typically oil-based rather than alcohol-based, which does remove alcohol specifically as a factor, and some people do find oil-based fragrance gentler on sensitive skin generally. But several essential oils commonly used in perfumery, some in attar blends included, are ones that midwives and health guidance around aromatherapy suggest using cautiously or avoiding during pregnancy, particularly in concentrated form or with direct, repeated skin contact. Concentration matters here too, a genuine attar can be far more concentrated than a typical alcohol-based spray.
The sensible approach
Rather than assuming either format is automatically safer, check with your midwife or GP if you have specific concerns about a particular ingredient, and don’t hesitate to switch to something lighter or pause fragrance altogether if anything feels off.
