PerfumeTok is the loose community of fragrance content on TikTok — reviews, hauls, ‘dupe’ comparisons and compliment stories — and scents go viral there because short, punchy videos reward strong reactions far more than balanced, considered opinions.

Why the format shapes what gets popular

A fifteen-second video praising a fragrance as a ‘compliment magnet’ or claiming it ‘smells like a million pounds’ is far more shareable than a nuanced review weighing up longevity, projection and skin chemistry differences. This tends to push certain loud, easily-described scent profiles — sweet, ambery, immediately recognisable — to the top, while quieter or more complex fragrances get far less attention regardless of how well-made they are.

Taking it with a pinch of salt

  • A video’s popularity reflects how well it performs on camera, not necessarily how the scent performs on your skin
  • Dupe claims are often exaggerated for engagement
  • What gets compliments for one creator may not for you, since skin chemistry varies enormously

It’s also worth remembering that plenty of genuinely excellent, well-regarded fragrances never go viral simply because they’re harder to sum up in fifteen seconds, not because they’re any less well made.
