How Many Perfumes Should You Test in One Shop Visit Before Your Nose Gives Up?

Around three to four is realistic before your nose genuinely struggles to tell fragrances apart, after that you’re mostly guessing rather than actually smelling any real difference between them.
Why your nose has a limit
This comes down to olfactory fatigue, your nose’s receptors becoming temporarily less responsive to smells it’s already been exposed to repeatedly in a short space of time. After a handful of fragrances, your ability to distinguish subtle differences drops off noticeably, and continuing to test past that point tends to produce unreliable impressions rather than a genuine sense of how each perfume actually smells.
How to test more effectively
- Narrow your choices to three or four before you even walk in, rather than sampling everything on the counter
- Test on blotter cards first, then commit to skin only for your top pick or two
- Take a break, step outside for fresh air, if you want to test more later in the same visit
