Layering turns fragrance from something you buy into something you build.
Layering means combining two or more fragrances or fragrance formats — oil, spray, bakhoor — to create a scent more personal and often longer-lasting than any one alone. It’s a long-established practice in Arabian perfumery specifically, and an increasingly popular technique in Western fragrance culture too.
Getting started
- Start with complementary, not competing, families — an amber base with a citrus top, for example.
- Apply the longer-lasting layer (usually oil) first, then the lighter layer on top or afterward.
- Test each combination on your own skin before committing to it for an important occasion.
