More people are put off oud by over-application than by the scent itself. Wear it right and it’s one of the most rewarding things in fragrance.

Step by step

  • Start with clean, moisturised skin — an unscented lotion helps oud (and any fragrance) cling and develop properly.
  • Apply a small amount to pulse points — wrists, inner elbows, behind the ears and the base of the throat. One dab per point is plenty for pure oil.
  • Don’t rub your wrists together — press or dab instead, so you don’t crush the top of the scent’s development.
  • Give it time — oud’s opening can be sharp or strong; the real character usually shows within 20–30 minutes and settles further over the following hour.
  • Reapply sparingly if needed — oud is a heavy base note built to last, so you’ll likely need far less top-up than a light eau de toilette.

How much is too much?

A good rule of thumb: if you can still smell yourself strongly an hour after applying, others around you are likely smelling considerably more. Oud rewards restraint — a little genuinely does go a long way, and understated is generally the more sophisticated read.

Oil, spray or bakhoor — does application change?

  • Pure oud oil or attar: dab, don’t rub, directly onto pulse points.
  • Oud-forward spray: apply at arm’s length to the same pulse points; the alcohol carrier means it projects further immediately.
  • Bakhoor: burned rather than worn directly, used to scent clothing, hair and rooms — see our dedicated bakhoor guide.

Layering oud with other scents

Oud pairs beautifully with rose, saffron, amber and vanilla. A drop of a lighter, sweeter fragrance over or under an oud base can soften intensity while keeping the depth — see our full guide to fragrance layering for the details.

Frequently asked questions

Should you rub oud oil into your skin?

No — press or dab it on and leave it. Rubbing generates friction heat that can break down the top of the fragrance and alter how it develops.

Can you wear oud to work?

Yes, applied lightly. A sweeter, moderate-intensity oud like Gold Dust worn sparingly is entirely office-appropriate.
