How Much Perfume Should You Actually Wear?

Episode 5 — How Much Perfume Should You Actually Wear?

Most people either use far too much perfume, out of nervousness, or far too little, out of fear of overwhelming a room. Almost nobody’s ever been shown the middle ground — and getting it right comes down to understanding a few simple mechanics.

Why Pulse Points Actually Work

Pulse points, like your wrists, throat, and inside your elbows, work because blood vessels sit close to the surface there, running slightly warmer than the rest of your skin. That warmth speeds up evaporation, helping the fragrance lift gently into the air all day. But rubbing your wrists together, a habit almost everyone has, actually works against you — the friction and heat disturb the top notes, the lightest and most delicate part of the composition, before they’ve had a chance to do their job properly.

How Many Sprays You Actually Need

How much you should spray depends heavily on concentration. An Eau de Parfum usually needs just two to three sprays for an ordinary day. Eau de Toilette, being lighter, often wants three or four. A true Parfum can genuinely be a single dab.

Understanding Sillage

Sillage — the trail a fragrance leaves as you move through a room — is worth understanding too. A simple, honest way to check your own: ask someone you trust at the end of the day whether they can still smell you at a normal, comfortable distance.

Timing, Moisture, and Atomisers

Timing matters as well. Applying straight after a shower, while skin is still slightly damp, helps a fragrance settle in and last longer, since hydrated skin holds fragrance more effectively than dry skin. And not every bottle releases the same amount per spray — atomiser mechanisms genuinely vary between brands and bottle sizes, so “three sprays” isn’t a fixed, universal unit.

Climate Changes The Calculation

Climate changes the calculation too. In real heat, warmth amplifies projection, so what felt like a tasteful two sprays in winter can feel like considerably more in summer.
