The safety reasoning behind it

Oakmoss naturally contains atranol and chloroatranol, compounds identified as potential skin sensitisers capable of triggering allergic contact dermatitis in susceptible individuals. As part of ongoing safety reviews, the concentration of these compounds permitted in fragrance products was restricted, meaning perfumers could no longer use oakmoss extract at the levels earlier chypre formulas were built around.

What happened to classic chypre perfumes as a result

Many long-running chypre fragrances had to be reformulated using alternative moss-like accords, built from other materials to approximate that distinctive mossy, dry base without relying on oakmoss at the original concentration.
