Person gently holding a clear glass perfume bottle, sensitive skin fragrance use

Hormonal changes during pregnancy, particularly rising oestrogen, are widely believed to heighten sensitivity to smell, which is why fragrances that felt perfectly pleasant before can suddenly seem overwhelming, or even trigger nausea, especially in early pregnancy.

What’s thought to be behind it

An enhanced sense of smell in early pregnancy is one of the most commonly reported experiences among pregnant people, and while the exact mechanism isn’t fully settled scientifically, hormonal shifts are the most widely cited explanation. It’s often linked closely with morning sickness too, certain smells becoming genuine nausea triggers even when they weren’t bothersome before. This tends to be most pronounced in the first trimester and often eases somewhat as pregnancy progresses, though it varies a lot between individuals.

What to do if it’s affecting you

Switching to a much lighter application, a completely different, simpler scent, or skipping fragrance altogether for a while are all reasonable responses, there’s no obligation to push through if a favourite perfume now makes you feel unwell.
