Little to no smoke usually means the heat is too low to properly release the fragrance, most commonly because an electric burner is on a gentle setting, or charcoal has not fully caught and reached its proper temperature. It does not necessarily mean the bakhoor is faulty.

The Usual Causes

  • An electric burner set too low, which warms the chips without releasing much visible smoke
  • Charcoal that has not fully lit, showing only a dull glow rather than an even white-grey ash coating
  • Chips that are too small or old, having partly dried out and lost some of their oil content
  • Too much bakhoor piled on at once, smothering the heat rather than letting it burn evenly

Getting a Better Result

With charcoal, wait until it is fully lit and covered in a light grey ash before adding bakhoor, and with electric burners, try a slightly higher setting. Remember that scent output matters more than visible smoke, so if the room is filling with fragrance despite minimal smoke, nothing is actually wrong.
