Why Do Arabian Perfumes Last Longer Than Western Perfumes?
Arabian perfumery typically favours oil-based formats and heavier base materials such as oud, musk, amber and resins, all of which evaporate far more slowly than the lighter, alcohol-based sprays common in Western perfumery, so longevity is really a difference in ingredients and format rather than any single secret.
Format Makes a Real Difference
An oil sits on the skin and releases scent gradually as body heat warms it, unlike an alcohol spray which flashes off far more quickly, carrying volatile top notes with it. Arabian perfumery has historically leaned on oil and attar formats for centuries, which naturally lends itself to longer wear compared to the eau de toilette sprays that dominate much of the Western market.
Ingredients Play a Big Part Too
Oud, musk and amber are all naturally long-lasting base materials, and Arabian perfumery tends to build fragrances around these heavier notes rather than the lighter citrus and floral top notes that define much of mainstream Western perfumery. Neither tradition is superior, they are simply built for different priorities. Our guide to Arabian perfume covers this properly, and our complete guide to perfume has more on longevity across styles.
