Wild agarwood forms when a tree is naturally infected by a specific mould, and its resin develops over an unpredictable, often very long timescale, sometimes decades, shaped by whatever environmental stresses the individual tree happened to experience. This unpredictability is part of why wild oud has historically been prized as uniquely complex and variable from tree to tree.
