A linen spray is formulated specifically to be sprayed directly onto fabric, bedding, and curtains without staining or damaging the material, while a room spray is designed to be misted into the air of a space to freshen it, and using one in place of the other can lead to disappointing or even damaging results.

Why the formulation actually matters

Linen sprays are typically gentler and lower in concentration, often formulated with fabric-safe solvents and sometimes a touch of fabric conditioner-like ingredients, specifically to avoid marking or discolouring textiles even with repeated use on the same sheets or curtains. Room sprays, by contrast, are built purely to scent the air effectively, sometimes with a stronger fragrance load or ingredients that aren’t necessarily fabric-friendly, since they’re not intended to land directly on soft furnishings in concentrated amounts.

Using a standard room spray directly and repeatedly on bedding can risk staining or leaving a residue over time, particularly on lighter-coloured or delicate fabrics, which is exactly why dedicated linen sprays exist as a separate product. If you want to scent your bedroom generally, a room spray works well in the air; if you want your sheets themselves to smell lovely, it’s worth using a product actually designed for fabric.
