On a cosmetics or skincare ingredients list, “fragrance” or “parfum” is an umbrella term covering the entire scent blend used in that product, which can legally contain dozens of individual aromatic ingredients without any of them being listed separately.

Why It Is Grouped Together Like This

Fragrance formulas are often considered trade secrets, since a perfumer’s exact blend is effectively their intellectual property, so regulations in the UK and elsewhere allow the entire scent mixture to be listed under this single umbrella term rather than disclosing every individual aromatic compound used.

What This Means If You Have Sensitivities

If you have known allergies to specific fragrance compounds, a generic “fragrance” listing does not tell you enough on its own, though many products now separately list common allergens required by law, such as certain named essential oil compounds, even within a fragranced product.
