Vanilla might be the single most universally liked note in perfumery — and it’s doing far more work than most people realise.
Vanilla is a warm, sweet, comforting base note, used both as a genuine natural extract and, far more commonly today, as vanillin, a synthetic material recreating vanilla’s core character consistently and affordably. It’s rarely the star of a fragrance alone, but it appears as a supporting material across an enormous range of compositions, softening and rounding out sharper or heavier notes.
