Amber attar and perfume oil bottles held in hand

It is a good habit, yes, particularly for oils that contain natural or heavier ingredients like oud, musk or resins, which can settle slightly at the bottom of the bottle over time.

Why Settling Happens

Perfume oils are blends of different aromatic materials with slightly different densities, and given time on a shelf, the heavier base notes can drift towards the bottom while lighter components stay higher up. A gentle shake or roll of the bottle between your palms redistributes everything so what you apply matches the full intended blend rather than just the top layer.

How to Do It Properly

A light shake or a few rolls between your hands is enough, there is no need for vigorous shaking, which can introduce air bubbles into a roll-on applicator. This is worth doing every time you use a bottle that has been sitting unused for a while. This matters even more for attars and khaltat blends containing several separate oils, since these can separate more visibly than a single, simpler perfume oil. Our guide to attar and perfume oils has more practical tips like this, and the complete guide to perfume covers general care too.
