Perfume for the baby itself is not really appropriate, since babies should not wear fragrance on their skin — but treating the mother-to-be to a lovely perfume or home fragrance gift for herself can be a genuinely thoughtful baby shower present.

Why Not for the Baby

Newborn skin is thin, sensitive and easily irritated by alcohol and concentrated fragrance oils, so any gift marketed as “baby perfume” is best avoided entirely — this is covered properly in our guide to perfume safety for families and children.

Where It Does Work at a Baby Shower

  • A lovely everyday perfume for the mother-to-be as a small treat during a demanding stage of life
  • A gentle home fragrance or diffuser for the nursery, used well away from the baby’s skin and cot
  • A relaxing, softly scented self-care set for after the birth rather than anything aimed at the baby

If in doubt, gifting the parent rather than the baby is almost always the safer and more genuinely useful choice. Our perfume gift guide, part of the complete guide to perfume, has more occasion-specific ideas.
