What the box is actually protecting against

Light, particularly direct sunlight and UV exposure, breaks down certain fragrance molecules over time and can cause both a change in colour and a gradual dulling of the scent itself. The box acts as a simple, effective light shield, especially useful if a bottle is stored somewhere with any natural light at all, a windowsill, an open shelf near a window. Temperature and humidity matter more than the box itself, though, so a bottle kept out of its box but in a cool, dark drawer or cupboard will actually outlast one left in its box on a sunny windowsill.

What matters more than the box

  • Keeping bottles away from direct sunlight and heat sources like radiators
  • Storing upright in a cool, stable-temperature spot, a bedroom drawer or cupboard is ideal
  • Keeping the cap on tightly when not in use to limit air exposure
