Can Oud Expire?

Pure oud oil does not really expire in the way food or skincare does. It is one of the few perfume materials that genuinely improves with age, developing a deeper, rounder character over years. A finished oud perfume or spray, however, is a different story and does have a practical shelf life.
Pure Oil vs Finished Perfume
Distilled oud oil, stored properly in a dark glass bottle away from heat and light, can be kept for many years and traditionally is valued more highly the older it gets, much like a good whisky or wine. A bottled oud eau de parfum or spray contains alcohol, water and other aromatic materials that behave differently, and while they last a long time, the top notes can fade and the blend can shift after several years open.
Signs It Has Actually Turned
Look out for a sour or acrid edge that was not there originally, a noticeably thinner scent, or a colour change alongside a smell that has gone flat rather than deep.
